Morenci is located on
the southern border of Lenawee county on M-156. The southern border is also
the Ohio state line. Morenci was first settled in 1833 when William Sutton
built a sawmill and a tavern here. Around the same time Japheth Whitman
built a general store and became the towns first postmaster, naming it
Morenci. It received a station on the Lake Shore and Southern Michigan
Railroad in the 1860's, which helped it grow to where it incorporated as a
village in 1871 It was eventually incorporated as a city in 1934. See more
